Dr. GiaQuinta reflects on finding purpose, connection, and impact through Project Reads and the simple power of saying yes to volunteering.
Hi, my name is Dakota, I’m from Fort Wayne, Indiana, I have three siblings, and I currently work at a local restaurant. A little fun fact about me is that I was born with half a heart.
I came to The Literacy Alliance because I wanted to get my high school equivalency (HSE/GED) diploma quickly, but it ended up taking me two years. My school experience was different. Because of my health condition, people didn’t always see me the same way. I also didn’t always understand the material as quickly as others. Earning my HSE is something I never thought I would actually accomplish.
My experience at The Literacy Alliance has been great. The teachers are amazing, and Ms. Megan was even my teacher back in middle school. They were patient with me and never got upset when I didn’t understand something right away. That made a big difference.
My future goal is to become an assistant manager at a restaurant, and someday I would love to own my own.
These last two years have been amazing, even though there were times I wanted to quit. If you put in the hard work, you can achieve your goals, and you can earn your HSE too. I always recommend graduating from high school if you can, because it’s easier. But if you need to get your HSE, The Literacy Alliance is worth it.
