How long have you been volunteering with TLA?
I have been volunteering for TLA in Project Reads for just over a year.

Why did you decide to volunteer at TLA?
After a United Way presentation at our staff meeting, I noticed TLA and Project Reads sparked my attention. I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and while my career has taken a different path I am enjoying, I still always have the itch to be working with & helping young minds.

What has been the best part of your experience so far?
Personal connection with the students is by far the most rewarding part of the experience. Seeing the excitement in the students’ eyes that someone showed up for them and took the time means so much. Coming in at a close second would be the moments of pride you can see in the student when they conquer a new skill or word.

What have you learned about yourself and/or about others through volunteering at The Literacy Alliance?
I have learned that a passion for helping people is still strong inside of me. I get to spend one day a week with others who have a similar drive, and it restores your faith in our world a little more to know people are out here helping.

If you were to encourage someone else to volunteer with our organization, what would you say?
I would encourage them that no expertise is needed – just a caring heart and desire to help. I am rewarded each week just as much as my student when we are finished. The joy and connection are good for the soul!

What is one of your favorite books you would suggest others to read?
My reading time is limited, but varied these days, but I will go with some throwbacks. I had 2 favorite books from elementary that impacted my reading/learning journey: Dr. Doolittle and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Both classics are worth the read!
On the other side of the coin, if you have never had the pleasure of reading a Junie B. Jones book, I HIGHLY recommend – The entertainment level is quite high.

...if you’re reading this, my advice is simple: don’t give up on yourself. The road may be tough, but it’s always worth it.
