TLA Graduate: Michael
Hi, my name is Michael, and I came to TLA to strive for a better future. I’m hoping to further my education and gain good employment. I enjoy the TLA program because the teachers work one on one to better their students. I’ve learned so much, and I am so grateful that each and every day I get to walk into a classroom of individuals who want more for themselves. After I graduate, I hope to find a career and continue my education.
Before coming to this program, I was very scared and hesitant. I felt like I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the people around me. But now that I’m involved and coming to class every day, I can see that my fear wasn’t necessary. I enjoy coming to class and learning new things. I never thought that simply showing up and giving a little effort would bring me to where I am today.
I found The Literacy Alliance program through another program I was in called the Salvation Army. Due to my past, I was brought to the Salvation Army for rehabilitation, and after five months I was told about TLA. At first, I shrugged it off, thinking I could never keep up with class and homework. But eventually, I had the courage to apply online. Now, when I think about college, it doesn’t seem so far out of reach. I know that when I graduate from TLA, it will open up so many doors for me. I am truly blessed and grateful to be here.
What I hope to achieve while in TLA is a sense of accomplishment. I want to build myself up and further my education. I’m 32, and I’m hoping to find a career in something I’m good at. I’m not quite sure what I want to study yet, but I’m sure given time I’ll find something I love. I’m also hoping to build my social skills and break down walls that are holding me back. I’m a shy person in new environments, so I’m hoping to open up more.
I think what I’ve learned most from being in class is that anyone can do this. All it takes is showing up and putting in the work. I’ll know I’m where I need to be once I build myself up and find a career. This whole experience has been a surprise to me because I never thought I could accomplish the things I’ve done. I have no regrets about applying for The Literacy Alliance program, and I’m truly grateful for my teachers cheering me on. This whole experience has been amazing, and I plan to continue my education once I graduate from TLA.
Michael achieved his high school equivalency diploma by passing the GED exam in December of 2025; we can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next!
