I want to see others succeed in their goals and overcome their obstacles. Not everyone has it so simple; many things...

My name is Lindsey, and I’m from Decatur, Indiana. I live in a house full of girls and with my two-year-old little boy. I grew up in an apartment for thirteen years until I found out I was pregnant, and my mother had finally saved some money to get a house so we could move.
By the time I got to high school, my belly was showing, and school only got worse. I didn’t have many friends, but I learned to accept that. My grades were slipping, and I honestly was not motivated to finish. It became so overwhelming that I had to do what I felt would give me some relief, then I found this amazing program called “Be Someone Now” to ensure I was successful.
I thought I could pull through my last three years of high school having a child; I felt amazing when I finished freshman year. Sophomore year it became more real to me that I still had quite some time of school left that I could not do. I took a different route, but I believe things will improve from here on out. The Literacy Alliance has motivated me to do more things in life.
My son is always 100% my motivation. Being in school took so much time away from being spent with him, and the hours the classes are at Project Graduate fit perfectly into my schedule. I want to achieve great things, and doing this gives me the final push in life to do so. I want a good and happy life, not just working, which pushes me to do much better and put in 10 times the effort.
After getting my high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, my goal is to have enough money saved to move into an apartment and start a life for me and my son. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find a good job for myself doing something that I enjoy. Being financially and fully independent is my biggest goal as of now. Being at The Literacy Alliance has opened my mind to math more; I feel much more educated and feel like I have been set free.

“Reading is the foundation of everything. As a former teacher, if a person does not have the reading skill or level of reading, they can miss out on a lot.”
