Volunteer Spotlight: Maxime

Volunteer Spotlight

TLA Graduate Maxime

When Maxime first came to The Literacy Alliance as a student, he dreamed of improving his English and building a brighter future. Today, he’s not only achieved those goals, he’s come back to give others the same chance. Since joining TLA as a volunteer in September, Maxime has found joy in helping learners from around the world gain confidence and find their voices. His story is one of gratitude, growth, and the belief that literacy can transform lives, one learner at a time.

How long have you been volunteering with TLA?
I’ve been volunteering with The Literacy Alliance since September of this year, and it’s been a truly rewarding experience so far.

Why did you decide to volunteer at TLA?
I decided to volunteer with TLA because I strongly believe that literacy is one of the most powerful tools for personal and community transformation. Reading and education empower people to dream bigger, build confidence, and open new doors — and I wanted to contribute to that kind of positive change. I was also a beneficiary of TLA’s program myself, so I wanted to give back and show my gratitude by donating my time.

What has been the best part of your experience so far?
The best part has been seeing learners gain confidence with every small step. Watching someone begin to believe in their own potential is inspiring, and it reminds me that even small efforts can make a lasting difference. I especially enjoy working with people from different cultures and countries who are learning English to better adjust, contribute to the development of the community, and to this beautiful country.

Do you have a favorite volunteer role/task with our organization?
I especially enjoy working directly with learners — particularly those from different cultural backgrounds who are learning English to adapt and thrive. Whether it’s helping them strengthen reading skills or preparing for real-life situations, I find those personal connections incredibly meaningful.

What have you learned about yourself and/or others through volunteering at The Literacy Alliance?
I’ve learned that patience and encouragement can completely change someone’s outlook. Volunteering has also helped me appreciate the courage it takes for adults to return to learning — it’s a humbling and motivating reminder of the resilience people carry within them.

If you were to encourage someone else to volunteer with our organization, what would you say?
I would say: don’t hesitate! The Literacy Alliance is a warm, supportive community where your time and skills truly matter. You’ll not only help others learn — you’ll grow in the process, too.

What is one of your favorite books you would suggest others to read?
Two of my favorite books are The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Power of Mentors by Penelope Trunk. The Alchemist is a timeless reminder to follow your dreams, listen to your heart, and trust that every step — even the unexpected ones — leads you closer to your purpose. The Power of Mentors offers valuable insights on how to find and make the most of mentorship relationships to accelerate your growth and career.

Is there anything else you’d like to include?
Just a big thank-you to the entire TLA team for the important work you do and for always making volunteers feel appreciated. It’s a privilege to be part of this mission.
