Student Spotlight: Carolyn

Student Spotlight

Student Carolyn

Carolyn accomplished something she thought she was unable to do. She passed the high school equivalency (HSE) test. “I didn’t think I would be able to do it on my own,” she said. “I felt discouraged and wondered if I would ever get my diploma.

Carolyn was homeless at 17 years. She had reached the 11th grade, but finishing high school was not an option. Years rolled by, and she reached a time when there was “nothing in the way to get my diploma.” She said, “I really wanted to get my diploma and knew it was time.” She contacted The Literacy Alliance and began the intake process.

Participating in Literacy Alliance HSE classes rewarded Carolyn with knowledge and proficiency in math. The realization that she can learn and master math boosted her confidence, which led to more class participation. “I like to participate in class,” she said. “I feel worthy of doing those things I have only dreamed of.” She credits help and encouragement from everyone in her class.

Carolyn’s effort deserves most of the credit. She had no transportation but the bus. She got herself to class when she did not want to go and often arrived early for tutor help.

With the HSE diploma, Carolyn sees college in her future. She wants to pursue a career in journalism.
