Volunteer Spotlight: Natalie

Volunteer Spotlight

Natalie

Following in the footsteps of her father, who found fulfillment through volunteering, Natalie was looking for a way to help people after retiring from teaching music. In 2017 she came across The Literacy Alliance on a volunteer connection website and hasn’t looked back. While she admits she is rusty in some areas of math, she enjoys the challenge of working through the problems with her students, “I feel like I learn almost as much from the students as they are learning from me.”

“I feel like I learn almost as much from the students as they are learning from me.”

During the few months that classes had to be virtual due to COVID restrictions, Natalie played piano via Zoom; she tried to be creative to encourage and bring something positive to the virtual classrooms. When asked what advice she would give to those new to tutoring, Natalie says, “Remember that each student comes with their reason for being there. Treat them with respect and enjoy what they bring to your life while helping to change theirs. Don’t be afraid to ask the wonderful TLA teachers for help if you need it!”
