Volunteer Spotlight: Tony GiaQuinta, MD

Volunteer Spotlight

Dr. Tony GiaQuinta, Pediatrician - Project Reads Volunteer

How long have you been volunteering with TLA?
Five years.

Why did you decide to volunteer at TLA?
I wanted a reset in the middle of my week — time to put away my phone, emails, and the constant to do list in my head, and simply focus on giving. There is no wrong way to volunteer, but for me, I wanted to invest my time in something that connects to my work as a pediatrician. For one hour each week, I love knowing I can support a child’s brain development and help build a secure attachment with a trusted adult. I hope those small moments contribute to a child’s long term success.

What has been the best part of your experience so far?
The one on one time with the kids. That spark of connection as soon as I walk into the room — the big smiles, high fives, fist bumps, and working through a tough sentence in a book together. It is an incredible feeling.

What have you learned about yourself and or about others through volunteering at The Literacy Alliance?
I recently read a biography of St. Therese of Lisieux and often reflect on her “little way” while I am volunteering. She believed in doing ordinary things with extraordinary love. Volunteering at The Literacy Alliance helps me recenter myself and reconnect with my community by showing up in small but meaningful ways.

If you were encouraging someone else to volunteer with our organization, what would you say?
It all starts with a “yes.” TLA takes the reins from there.

What is one of your favorite books you would suggest others read?
I am a bit of a history nerd and love historical nonfiction. Erik Larson has a gift for bringing pivotal moments in history to life with suspense and vivid detail. The Devil in the White City is my favorite of his books.
