Trying to start over at my age had me on edge, but with the support and encouragement of my teachers, I was able to believe in myself again.
TLA Volunteer Linh
How long have you been volunteering with TLA? Why did you decide to volunteer at TLA?
I have been volunteering with TLA since September 2022, after seeing a flyer for the organization at the library. As someone who is still in school and pursuing my own education, I was moved by the prospect of helping others achieve theirs.
What has been the best part of your experience so far?
The best part of my experience so far has been hearing that someone I’ve tutored or worked with has passed their HSE exam. Even if I only played a small role in their journey, I feel honored to have helped them work toward their goal, and I love knowing they’re moving on to bigger and better things.
What have you learned about yourself and/or about others through volunteering at The Literacy Alliance?
Through volunteering at TLA, I’ve learned that even though things can be hard, they are never impossible. Concepts that seem new and difficult for students can be overcome with practice and repetition. This perspective reminds me that the challenges I face in my own studies can also be mastered with time and persistence.
What is one of your favorite books you would suggest others read?
For those who enjoy true crime or mystery, I would recommend Bright Young Women. It’s a stunning read about different women and how they handle the aftermath of crimes committed against their loved ones.
