Student Spotlight: Meshia

My name is Meshia, and I am 21 years old. I am from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I have one brother and four sisters, and I also have a daughter.
The Literacy Alliance offices will be closed, and no classes will be held from Tuesday, December 24, 2024, through Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Regular office hours and Project Graduate (GED/HSE) classes will resume on Thursday, January 2, 2025. Project Connect (ELL) classes will restart on Monday, January 6, 2025. From our families to yours, have a safe and joyful holiday season!
Why did you decide to volunteer at The Literacy Alliance?
I was interested in helping others. I was also interested in utilizing my engineering background in some fashion outside of the work environment.
What has been the best part of your experience so far?
The most rewarding part is seeing a student graduate. Particularly those that struggled with school materials on top of the other things going on in the world around them.

Why should others volunteer?
We can all use a little help. Sometimes by helping others you can end up helping yourself.
What advice would you give a new volunteer?
Listen. Be patient. There is no one right way to teach someone. You may have to try several approaches to solving a problem that a student may be stuck on
