How long have you been volunteering with TLA?
Not sure about this one. I think about six months?
Why did you decide to volunteer at TLA?
I wanted to help people achieve their education and life goals by helping them build literacy skills while giving them confidence in themselves. I wanted to learn from others as well.
What has been the best part of your experience so far?
I have really enjoyed watching people progress and gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. It is great to be able to see someone feel good about themselves and be with them on their journey.
Do you have a favorite volunteer role/task with our organization?
I enjoy working with people on reading comprehension. Things don’t always progress quickly but the people I have worked with were tenacious. It was great to share in their happiness and pride when they were able to master a specific skill.
What have you learned about yourself and/or about others through volunteering at The Literacy Alliance?
I have learned how fortunate I have been to have received an education. I will never take for granted how valuable and important education is and how everyone should have the opportunity to achieve as much as they can no matter when they start their journey.
If you were to encourage someone else to volunteer with our organization, what would you say?
The skills people learn at The Literacy Alliance are skills that they will keep and use every day for the rest of their lives. Literacy and education in general are the building blocks for a person’s future. The Literacy Alliance allows volunteers to make a positive, meaningful, and long-term impact on people and the community.
What is one of your favorite books you would suggest others to read?
My favorite book is “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac. It is a great example of the travels, experiences, and self-discoveries of some of the Beat poets. Lessons learned by the main character are relevant to today’s society as well.
Is there anything else you’d like to include?
Thank you for the opportunity! I encourage anyone that is curious to check out the Literacy Alliance!
