Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Jane

Have you considered volunteering? As a volunteer for five years, Mary Jane says, “Don’t be afraid and just try it.” The reward, in the end
Hello! My name is Debbie, and I am 28 years old. Currently, I am a gas station clerk, but I have my certified nursing assistant (CNA) license in Indiana. I live with my boyfriend and our three dogs: Diablo, Sausage, and Red. I love going on walks and hikes with my little family. I also like to go swimming and camping, although if you caught me at home, I would be cleaning, cooking, or watching TikTok.
I came to The Literacy Alliance because I am very passionate about helping and caring for people. As I said before, I am a CNA, and I would love to advance my career and become a registered nurse (RN). I have put off getting my high school equivalency (HSE) diploma for almost 11 years. To go to the next chapter in life, I need to obtain my HSE. I ran across The Literacy Alliance on Google searching for “free GED classes.”
“I have put off getting my high school equivalency (HSE) diploma for almost 11 years. To go to the next chapter in life, I need to obtain my HSE.”
By taking classes at The Literacy Alliance, I expect to learn new things and relearn some old things. Upon taking my first tests, I didn’t think I scored very well. To my surprise, I am right on track for reading and language and a little off on the mathematics part… but barely! I also think that taking classes here will help me manage my time a bit better in my personal life.
My goals for obtaining my HSE are to not only prove other people wrong but myself as well. Getting my HSE will allow me to work with an agency using my CNA license, making more than $30 an hour while choosing my schedule. My next goal is to get back into college for my RN.
Obtaining my HSE will change my life in many ways. First and foremost, it will allow me to get back into school to further my education and, ultimately, my career. It will open many doors in my current CNA career as well. I will accept other job opportunities to make more money and live a little more comfortably. Last but certainly not least, this will teach me not to give up on my dreams and goals, which will help me later in life.
Update June 2022: Debbie met her first goal in May 2022 by passing the HiSET exam and earning her HSE diploma. We are excited to see what she accomplishes next!
