“Reading is the foundation of everything. As a former teacher, if a person does not have the reading skill or level of reading, they can miss out on a lot.”
The Literacy Alliance offices will be closed, and no classes will be held from Tuesday, December 24, 2024, through Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Regular office hours and Project Graduate (GED/HSE) classes will resume on Thursday, January 2, 2025. Project Connect (ELL) classes will restart on Monday, January 6, 2025. From our families to yours, have a safe and joyful holiday season!
My name is Christina, and I am thirty-two years old. I came from a family of seven. I have three wonderful children and a great boyfriend. I have worked in retail for three years, and I must admit I love it.
Although it has been a long time, my children are getting older and asking many questions. I decided to make time for myself and accomplish my goals. I had not been in school for at least ten years. So, I decided to look up different programs, and when I did, I found The Literacy Alliance and decided to give the program a shot.
I was amazed at how much I remembered and didn’t remember. The teacher, site coordinator and the tutors are all a blessing. I had no issue addressing my problems when I struggled because I never felt judged.
When I graduate – I know I will graduate – I will feel overwhelmed with emotions. I have been through a lot but I will not let my past define me. After I receive my high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, I plan on furthering my education to get my real estate license. Then eventually, I want to get a business degree to start my own real estate business.
I am destined for greatness. Remember, no journey comes easy; if it’s not worth having, it is not worth fighting for. Dreams do come true as long as you believe. Oh, and to my classmates, you are almost there, don’t give up. There are so many different people from different walks of life, and they are determined. I want to say that if no one else believes in you, I do. I cannot wait to see all your smiling faces in your cap and gown. I know you are all destined for greatness. One day I will be walking into your business and supporting you.
Finally, I would like to give a huge shout-out to my family and especially to The Literacy Alliance. All of you never gave up on me, even when I didn’t believe in myself. I never thought my dreams would come true, but I have learned that hard work and dedication make anything possible. So, the next time you see me, I will be standing proud in my cap and gown. The best part about it is showing my kids that it is never too late to follow your dreams. Thank you to everyone at The Literacy Alliance; you have changed my life for the better.

I ended up working dead-end and unfulfilled jobs to make ends meet. It was time to make a change for a better life for me and my son.
