Volunteer Spotlight: Becky and Gail

Volunteer Spotlight

For Becky and Gail, volunteering with The Literacy Alliance is about more than giving back. It is about friendship, laughter, and a shared belief in the power of education.

Becky first learned about TLA through Gail, who was already volunteering to help a student prepare for their GED. When there was a need for volunteers in large English language learning classes, the two decided to volunteer together and even carpool. Recently retired from careers in education, Becky as a school employee and Gail as a college professor, both felt called to continue supporting learning in their community. As a bonus, they were also trying to learn Spanish themselves, which helped them better understand the challenges English language learners face.

What Becky enjoys most is building relationships. Seeing students each week allows friendships to form, and working alongside teacher Jessica has been especially rewarding. She also gained a new appreciation for how complex English can be after seeing how hard adult learners work to master it.

For Gail, the best part is the people. She values the connections with students, the teacher, and volunteering alongside Becky. Tutoring allows her to continue using her time, talent, and experience in a meaningful way.

Their time together is filled with memorable moments, from animated car rides where they occasionally miss a turn to classroom discussions about how English speakers use different words for the same thing, like “skillet” versus “frying pan” or “dressing” versus “stuffing.” Gail also recalls volunteering together at a factory, where Becky once worked, adding a personal connection to the experience.

Volunteering has strengthened their friendship by giving them regular time together. They often ride to class, talk nonstop, and go out afterward for a snack or drink. They enjoy working as a team, sharing laughs, learning from one another, and supporting fellow volunteers.

Their advice to others is simple. Do it. Volunteering is rewarding, gives purpose, and creates meaningful connections. And if you can volunteer with a friend, even better.

We are grateful to Becky and Gail for the time, energy, and heart they bring to The Literacy Alliance and the learners they support each week.
