Student Spotlight: Candice

Student Candice

My name is Candice, and I’m 36 years old. I’m originally from South Bend, Indiana, but I was blessed to see many regions. I have the honor of being the oldest of eight siblings and having three children of my own. I currently own and operate my own business, Eden on a Platter.

I came to The Literacy Alliance really by accident. I was looking for Big Brothers Big Sisters for my children and walked into a blessing. Upon walking into the wrong building unknowingly, I heard a class and headed that way. My now teacher, Amy, asked if I needed any help and she pointed me in the right direction. She explained what her class was about and about how The Literacy Alliance program worked. Her kind spirit won me. I began my classes in May 2024.

My last attempt to get my GED was about 20 years ago, and it wasn’t for me. It wasn’t the work involved; it was the atmosphere—one of the things I love about The Literacy Alliance. Through my attendance here, I’ve become more confident, learned time management skills, and a strong sense of being. Learning fractions was never my strong suit, but my teacher made it effortless to retain.

My experience at The Literacy Alliance has been nothing short of amazing. Seeing my fellow students graduate and celebrate is always an honor to be a part of.

Once I obtain my high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, I plan to further my education by obtaining a culinary degree and eventually opening a storefront. I would also like to provide business internships and teach children that eating healthy can taste good and look delicious. With some of my profits, I would love to open a shelter for families because family, food, and faith are important to me.

I would say it’s never too late to “become.” If not now, then when? I need to give a great big thank you to my teacher Amy, as well as Megan and Melanee for all the encouragement on days that I wanted to throw in the towel. They kept me going. To all the volunteer tutors, you could be anywhere, but you choose to be here to help us, thank you! To my classmates, the graduates, and the future grads, you all make me look forward to class. Most of all, I would like to thank everyone who donates time, money, and prayers. Just know you’re helping others to “become.” Just look at me!
