Volunteer Spotlight: Troy

Volunteer Spotlight

Troy

In the process of heading back to school for a degree in education, Troy was looking for a place to participate with others in an academic setting. He found TLA and quickly began working with adult students. Watching students grow and excel in areas that had been challenging has been very rewarding for him as a tutor. “Seeing family and friends come to graduation is really special”. He feels that it doesn’t take that much time to make a difference by simply using skills that many of us take for granted.

When Project Reads joined forces with TLA in September 2021, Troy took notice. He stepped up even more and began tutoring our elementary students in addition to his original commitment to our adult students. Watching the children transform from having negative feelings about reading to enjoying it has been a great joy for Troy. “Being a part of getting them engaged in it” has resonated with him. “If you make time for it, it will pay off when you see the impact you have on people.”

Love to read and want to share that love with others like Troy? Click here to email Nicole or call (260) 423-0008. We need more than 150 volunteers to help with the Project Reads program in the coming school year!

I was born in Burma/Myanmar and went to school through grade 5. When I was 12, my family had to leave my home country because of persecution.
