Student Spotlight: Rocio

Student Spotlight

Rocio

My name is Rocio, and this is my story.

While living in Elkhart, Indiana, I attended general education classes. One day, out of the blue, my ex-husband told me that his job was transferring us to Fort Wayne. Sadly, I had to drop out of school. Once in Fort Wayne, my goal was to find a school and keep studying, but it was not possible initially. I did not give up because it was a goal I wanted to achieve; I wanted to get my high school diploma.

While looking for a job, I went to Work One. A flyer next to the computers talked about The Literacy Alliance and its high school equivalency (HSE) classes. I called and was signed up for the next assessment. I was so excited.

I like the program at The Literacy Alliance. The staff members are very positive, and the teachers are fantastic. They take the time to explain things that are hard for me to understand. I think I’ve been making good progress!

One of my goals is to get a better job. Many employers are looking for bilingual people, but also, they want a high school diploma. So, once I graduate, I hope I’ll get a better job and look into going to college.

TLA is excited to announce that Rocio achieved her goal and passed the high school equivalency exam in August of 2021, earning her HSE diploma!
