"I want to give my children the best life, so I’m doing everything I can to earn my GED—and I’m not planning on giving up."
TLA Volunteer Kathy Candioto
When I was a stay-at-home mom, I worked part-time as an English teacher in a GED program and promised myself that I would return to a similar role someday. After 30 years of teaching middle and high school, my family moved to Fort Wayne, where I learned about the amazing work being done by The Literacy Alliance.
In March 2024, I joined The Literacy Alliance as a tutor with Project Connect. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside the talented English language teacher Jessica Conley. Each session has been both rewarding and inspiring. The students are hardworking and determined to improve their writing, reading, and speaking skills in a new language. It has truly been an honor to help these young adults adjust to—and thrive in—their new country.

“Imagine that: a former high school dropout now standing at the front of a college classroom.”
