From our families to yours, have a safe and joyful holiday season!
How long have you been volunteering with TLA?
I have volunteered with The Literacy Alliance for two years. For the first six weeks, I helped out in the office. Since then, I have been a language tutor for the Summit AM and PM Project Graduate classes.
Why did you decide to volunteer at TLA?
I love reading, and helping students develop reading skills is rewarding. Good reading skills are essential in everyday life, and strong reading skills enhance one’s work, personal, family, spiritual, and life experiences.
What has been the best part of your experience so far?
It is exciting to watch students grow in confidence and graduate. I have a lot of respect for the students. It takes courage to join a class after being out of school for a long time or if English is not your first language. Teachers, site coordinators, and tutors work together to help the students become comfortable in the classroom.
Do you have a favorite volunteer role/task with our organization?
I enjoy tutoring for the classes.
What have you learned about yourself and others through volunteering at The Literacy Alliance?
I know I have grown by getting to know others from different backgrounds. I learn from the students as I work with them. These students have so much to offer.
What would you say if you were to encourage someone else to volunteer with our organization?
Volunteering is an enriching experience at The Literacy Alliance. The students I work with appreciate my time with them, and the students and staff constantly thank me. The other tutors and staff are dedicated and supportive.
What is one of your favorite books you would suggest others to read?
My favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird. I also read mysteries and biographies. During the pandemic, I read a biography of each US President.

I’ve been at TLA for about two months now, and the amount of stuff I remembered in that short time is mind-blowing.
