We have heard it before. What teenager hasn’t said, “School is stupid.” Or, “When will I ever use this stuff?” All of us have probably said it at one time or another.
Dominique was no different. Though try as she might, Dominique’s mom couldn’t convince her to stay in school. A high school dropout by freshman year, Dominque told herself, and her mom, that she would just go online and get her GED. She dropped out of that after only three months.
In time, Dominique realized she wanted to do more, and getting a high school credential would be the first step. “I needed to stop being lazy and just get it done,” she said. “I want to get a better job and get ahead in life.”
“I needed to stop being lazy and just get it done,” she said. “I want to get a better job and get ahead in life.”
Dominique’s mom told her about The Literacy Alliance. Dominique attended evening classes at The Summit for eight months before passing the HSE exam. Most rewarding about her time there were the people. “Everyone’s so friendly.”
Most challenging for Dominique was “Trying to stick to it.” There were times that Dominique wanted to give up. She had given up before, but her experience at The Literacy Alliance gave her confidence.
“I feel proud that I actually stuck through it,” Dominique said. “It has given me a lot of confidence.”
With the HSE diploma, Dominique will go to college. “I want to do something in graphic design,” starting with Ivy Tech then transferring to Purdue Fort Wayne. “I want to get a better job and be happy in life.”
