Student Story: Heather

Heather earned her GED at the same time as her son's high school graduation. Read her story of perseverance, motherhood, and finishing what she started.
My name is Brionna. I am twenty-eight years old, and I have four fur kids.
I moved to Fort Wayne from Michigan to get a fresh start. Part of that fresh start was going back to school for my high school equivalency (HSE) diploma after ten years out of high school. With the help of some amazing tutors and my teacher, Amy, I am very close to earning my HSE. I was also able to take a business course free of charge, and I now have a business certification through The Literacy Alliance. I have learned a lot over the last several months here.
I am not sure yet what I will do once I finish at The Literacy Alliance. What I do know is that having my HSE will open many doors that were not available to me before. I am very much looking forward to this next chapter of my life.
I am extremely grateful for all the help I have received at The Literacy Alliance. I appreciate all the opportunities and resources they have given me, and I am thankful for the other students, past and present, who have been part of this journey with me.
I never thought I would go back to school, and I am very happy that I did. We can do anything we set our minds to, especially with the support of the staff here at The Literacy Alliance. Often, when our trials seem the hardest is when we are closest to reaching our goals. Keep going. Your future is worth the effort. It is worth sticking it out. We never truly know what we are made of until we give ourselves an honest chance. If I can do it, so can you.
Brionna wrapped up the final GED section in August 2026, earning her HSE diploma and reaching the goal she set for herself. She came to TLA looking for a fresh start and is leaving with a diploma, a business certification, and plenty of momentum.
