Student Spotlight: Heavyn
Oct 20 2026
Heavyn left high school as a young mom. Now she’s earning her HSE diploma at The Literacy Alliance and building a steady future for herself and her son.
My name is Jessica, and I’m 38. I am from Indianapolis, Indiana, and I moved to Fort Wayne in 2020. My husband is incredibly wonderful and supportive, and I am currently a stay-at-home mother with 3 children of my own and 2 step-children. I came to The Literacy Alliance because after a 2-year period of rest following a 20-year abusive marriage, I am finally ready and capable of chasing my dreams.
Attending The Literacy Alliance has been a breath of fresh air. I had a hard time with math in high school, and Amy and the tutors worked with me one on one when I needed extra help to ensure my success.
The next step in my journey is to get a degree in psychology. After that, I’m not 100% sure, but my goal is to open a plant medicine clinic for addicts.
2 years ago, I didn’t think I was capable of this: showing up to class, relearning what I forgot, learning what I missed in school, and actually passing the high school equivalency (HSE/GED) test. And here I am, nearing 40, and I am proof that it is never too late. Thank you so much to Amy, Megan, all the tutors and everyone that makes The Literacy Alliance possible!
Jessica passed her final GED section, Math, in September 2026. That’s the same subject that gave her so much trouble in high school, which makes this finish even sweeter. Jessica, thank you for letting us be part of your journey. We’ll be cheering you on all the way to that psychology degree and the clinic you’re dreaming of opening.
