How long have you been volunteering with TLA?
It has been something like 12 years.
How did you hear about Project Reads?
My memory is from way back when Project Reads had someone come to my church. They were in the foyer and described volunteer work. That was the first time I was introduced to it, so I went from there.
What has been the best part of your experience so far?
The best part is how different all the kids have been. Back at Fairfield Elementary, there was a set of twin girls, and I worked with one of them that school year. She was just so sweet and loved to do artwork. I have a collage on a bulletin board in my garage, and I saved one from her. She loved to draw, so she did this little card that says, “Love Don.” I also remember that same year, after the Christmas break, we came back, and she saw me there, then ran over and hugged my leg and said, “ I missed you, Mr. Don!”
Do you have a favorite volunteer role/task with our organization?
I know it doesn’t go together with the reading, but the game time. At the end of the hour, we get to play a game for 10 to 15 minutes, and their personalities really come out during game time. I love that.
What have you learned about yourself and others through volunteering at The Literacy Alliance?
I would say that old saying is still true today: “The more you give, the more you get back.” It is so true. You get a bigger blessing back from working with the students.
What would you say if you were to encourage someone else to volunteer with our organization?
If you are even slightly interested, dive in and do it for a year. You will be so glad you did!
