Volunteer Spotlight: Paul

Each individual has to have a reason to volunteer, but I can say this: if you’re inclined, don’t hesitate to do it.
How long have you been volunteering with TLA?
I have been volunteering for three years. I started with Project Builds in the Allen County Public Library downtown, then went to one-on-one. I have been doing one-on-one for over a year and a half. I have been with my current student for over a year.
Why did you decide to volunteer at The Literacy Alliance?
I like working with and being able to help people who need help with their education. Whether it’s adults or children. I taught Math and Science for over 30 years in the Fort Wayne community schools.
What has been the best part of your experience so far?
I really enjoy watching it click, or the light turn on. When you see your student, start to understand what we have been working on—the ah-ha moment when you can see the understanding.
Why should others volunteer?
If they have the want and drive to help other students do their best in learning.
What would you tell others who are considering volunteering?
If you want to help someone, whether a child or adult, go for it. The Literacy Alliance definitely could use your help with the growing number of students.
