Student Spotlight: Roy

Hello, I am Roy, and I’m 25 years old. I am from Washington, Indiana, but I grew up in Fort Wayne. I have three brothers; the oldest one is my twin brother, who is only 18 minutes older than me. I also have four sisters, all of whom are younger than me. I currently work at a local manufacturing company doing various things, including cutting hoses, and packaging tape for other companies.

I came to The Literacy Alliance in the middle of 2020 because I can’t do much without school. I went to South Side High School until the middle of my senior year when I moved to Indianapolis and quit school about a month later. Indianapolis schooling was very behind in their teaching, and it honestly made me not want to finish.

My experience at The Literacy Alliance has been awesome. I enjoy coming Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Coming every week makes me feel amazing. Some days are harder than others, but it’s completely worth the time and effort.

My plan and one of the main reasons I came back to school was to go to college to study and get a degree in music production. When it comes to music, I would like to use it to change the world positively and be a good role model for my family.

I would like to thank Amy for helping me get this far, especially when school isn’t my favorite thing in the world. I would also like to thank my classmates for riding through this journey with me.

Update: Roy passed the HSE exam early in 2021. We are very proud of him and can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next!
