Student Spotlight: Tommy

Hi, my name is Thomas, but everybody calls me Tommy. I’ve just turned 38. I’m from Fort Wayne and was raised on the southeast side of town.
My name is Dulce. I am 33 years old, married and a full-time mother with three children- 2 boys and a girl.
My story begins with a friend of mine who told me about The Literacy Alliance, and I was already considering the possibility of getting my high school equivalency (HSE) diploma. I contacted the TLA office and got signed up for the next orientation.
I was excited to start my first day in the Summit AM classroom, and right away, I liked my teacher, Amy, who helped with my learning goals. I enjoyed all the subjects I was introduced to, but my focus subject, Language, became my favorite subject. I started to see progress in my studies which made me want to do even better and not miss class. The Summit AM tutors helped me a lot, especially with my math, and I also liked my classmates.

I thought the college and career exploration was fascinating and informative. The Ivy Tech Tour that our class went on was great for me, and I was excited to be on an actual college campus.
I now have a desire to go back home and teach English to those needing it in the community.
I’ve completed the HSE testing and now have my HSE diploma. It is truly a wonderful feeling knowing I have achieved this goal. Thank you to The Literacy Alliance for this opportunity to get my HSE diploma.
