Student Spotlight: Alyssia

Student Spotlight

Alyssia

Hi. My name is Alyssia. I am a single mother to an almost 2-year-old. I am here because my sister got her high school equivalency (HSE) diploma in The Literacy Alliance program, and she told me about it when I mentioned that I wanted to go back to school. There are people in my life pushing me to get my HSE diploma. I know it will be good for me and allow me to get a better-paying job. I want to further my education not only for myself but also for my almost 2-year-old son.

“I want to be a great role model for my son and to encourage him to stay in school.”

When I was a senior in high school, I got pregnant with my son and had to drop out. I wasn’t necessarily a bad student in high school, but I also didn’t take it seriously. That did not benefit me very well at all. I know now that I should have taken it more seriously than I did, especially knowing the benefits of getting my high school diploma.

I want to be able to have a good-paying job to help with bills and be able to get my son what he needs. After getting my HSE diploma, I want to work with my boyfriend. It is important that I be a great role model for my son, and he is the main reason I am pursuing this goal.

Update – October 2021: Alyssia passed the HSE exam in October 2021 and recently applied for the job she wanted. We are proud of everything Alyssia has accomplished and know she will achieve her future goals.
